ISLAMABAD – The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has decided to introduce a new security system for SIM registration in order to curb illegal practices.
This move comes after the continued issuance of illegal SIM cards despite the existing biometric system.
Authorities noted that some fraudsters have been using silicone replicas of fingerprints or stealing others’ identities to obtain unauthorized SIMs.
What’s the New Rule
To curb this practice, the PTA said the new registration that will require both fingerprint and facial verification, officials confirmed.
The chairman of PTA has directed the rapid implementation of the facial verification system, which is being designed according to international standards.
Officials said the updated system will make SIM registration more secure and effective, closing loopholes that allow fake fingerprints to be used.
The new measure is expected to aid in preventing terrorism, fraud, and other criminal activities by ensuring that SIM cards are issued only to verified individuals.
Last month, PTA has announced a new policy restricting telecom operators from increasing mobile phone package rates on a monthly basis.
The regulator’s decision comes in response to a growing number of complaints from consumers about frequent tariff hikes.
Under the updated rules, mobile package prices—including call, SMS, and data plans—can now be adjusted only on a quarterly basis.
The move is intended to protect subscribers from repeated increases while ensuring stability in the telecom sector.
Officials noted that previously, telecom companies had been revising their prices almost every month, causing frustration among users.
Going forward, operators will be required to review the previous year’s pricing before making any adjustments to their packages.
