NEW PETROL PRICE IN PAKISTAN – Relief for Pakistanis as PM Shehbaz Sharif announced urgent relief by cutting the petroleum levy by Rs80 per liter, bringing the price of petrol down from Rs. 458 to Rs. 378 per liter.
In his address to the nation, Prime Minister said oil prices are skyrocketing across international markets, creating economic shockwaves even in the world’s strongest economies, and Pakistan is no exception.

PM acknowledged the painful reality faced by ordinary citizens: the poor struggling to keep their stoves burning, farmers grappling with rising costs, and families battling relentless inflation. He said the government deliberately avoided passing the burden of daily fuel price hikes onto the public over the last three weeks. Instead, it absorbed the shock by spending Rs. 129 billion from national resources to shield citizens from the worst effects of the crisis.
Prime Minister highlighted the daily struggle of ordinary Pakistanis who wake before dawn after Fajr prayers and work tirelessly in harsh weather just to feed their families. “I understand how difficult life has become,” he said, promising that the government would continue using every available resource to protect the people from the inflation storm.
Sharif also expressed deep concern about the ongoing war in the Gulf and prayed for an immediate ceasefire and restoration of peace. He revealed that Pakistan’s leadership—including the Deputy Prime Minister and military leadership—has been actively working around the clock to support diplomatic efforts aimed at ending the conflict.
The relief measures announced by the government came after extensive consultations involving national leadership. A major meeting hosted by the President brought together chief ministers of all four provinces, the Prime Minister of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, the Chief Minister of Gilgit-Baltistan, and other key political leaders. Further discussions at the Prime Minister’s House resulted in a comprehensive national response plan.
The Prime Minister stressed that while other countries were witnessing miles-long queues for fuel and severe shortages, Pakistan had avoided such chaos through timely decisions and coordinated national efforts.
Massive Subsidy Package Announced
Alongside the petrol price reduction, the government unveiled a sweeping subsidy program designed to cushion the impact of rising fuel costs on transportation, agriculture, and daily life:
- Motorcycle users will receive a Rs. 100 per liter subsidy on petrol.
- Goods transport and public transport vehicles will receive Rs. 100 per liter subsidy for one month to stabilize transport costs.
- Small trucks will receive Rs. 70,000 per month in financial assistance.
- Large trucks will receive Rs. 80,000 per month.
- Public transport buses will receive Rs. 100,000 per month to prevent fare increases.
These measures, Sharif said, are aimed at preventing sudden spikes in transportation fares and the prices of essential commodities.
Relief for Farmers and Rail Passengers
In a major boost for agriculture, the government announced Rs. 1,500 per acre financial assistance for small farmers across Pakistan. The Prime Minister also directed the Ministry of Railways to freeze fares for economy-class passengers on Pakistan Railways, ensuring that low-income travelers are not burdened with additional costs.
Provincial Leaders Back National Effort
Sharif thanked provincial leaders for supporting the national relief plan and committing their resources to the effort, including Maryam Nawaz, Murad Ali Shah, Sohail Afridi, and Mir Sarfraz Bugti. He emphasized that this is a historic moment that requires national unity, cooperation, and determination.
The Prime Minister confirmed that all announced relief measures will also apply to Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Kashmir, with the federal government providing the necessary financial resources.
Cabinet to Sacrifice Six Months’ Salaries
In a symbolic gesture of solidarity with the public, Sharif announced that members of his cabinet, who had previously pledged two months’ salaries, will now donate six months’ salaries to support national relief efforts. While acknowledging that the amount may be modest, he said the gesture reflects the government’s determination to save every possible rupee for the welfare of citizens.
