LAHORE – The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) may soon introduce a change in national identity cards with an aim to save human lives in case of emergencies.
The computerized identity cards issued by NADRA serve as the official proof of identity for Pakistani citizens both within the country and abroad.
However, changes to the card’s format are now being considered following a newly approved resolution.
What’s the Proposed Change?
The Punjab Assembly unanimously passed a resolution proposing the inclusion of blood group information on national identity cards.
The resolution was presented by Member of Provincial Assembly Ahmed Iqbal Chaudhry, who argued that such an addition could help provide timely blood transfusions in case of accidents or medical emergencies.
According to the resolution, the lack of immediate access to a person’s blood type during serious accidents or natural disasters often causes delays for hospitals and blood banks.
The proposed update to the identity card would help ensure faster medical response and potentially save lives.
If implemented, the initiative would mark a significant step in enhancing Pakistan’s emergency healthcare infrastructure and the usefulness of national identity documentation.
Earlier, NADRA has announced that citizens applying for their first-ever national identity card can now obtain it for free.
The initiative allows individuals to receive their first non-smart chip identity card at no cost, simply by visiting a NADRA center.
Citizens can get their cards within 15 days without any fees, provided this is their first application for an ID card.
This move has been widely praised by the public, with many calling for the facility to be made available through the “Pak ID” mobile app as well, to streamline the process.
