ISLAMABAD – Both the National Assembly and Senate of Pakistan are set to hold crucial sessions today, with major legislative matters on the agenda.

The government has instructed all members of parliament to ensure their attendance for these important proceedings.

Sources said that the National Assembly session may see the passage of the Anti-Terrorism Amendment Bill and a bill to increase the number of judges.

A seven-point agenda has been issued for the National Assembly session, including a call-to-attention notice regarding Pakistan’s decline in the global judicial and Rule of Law Index.

Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) member Sehar Kamran is expected to highlight Pakistan’s position at 129 out of 142 countries in the 2024 Rule of Law Index.

Additionally, the Law Minister will brief the Assembly on this global ranking report.

Law Minister Azam Nazir is also set to present the Supreme Court Practice and Procedure Ordinance in the Assembly.

A call-to-attention notice regarding the grounding of national airline aircraft is also part of the agenda.

Meanwhile, a 39-point agenda has been issued for the Senate session, which includes the introduction of three new bills and the presentation and approval of reports from the Standing Committee on 11 bills.

In a related update, the National Assembly session has been rescheduled to begin at 4pm instead of the previously scheduled 5 pm, as confirmed by the National Assembly spokesperson.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also convened a major meeting of the federal cabinet today.

Senior PML-N leader Barrister Aqeel Malik commented that misleading impressions are being spread regarding the government’s intentions, saying that it is not looking to influence the judiciary by appointing its own judges.
