ISLAMABAD – Pakistan’s recent largest telecom merger of Telenor and Ufone is expected to lead to a job cuts as the new entity, e& has started an organisational overhaul, according to reports.
The restructuring exercise started after the legal completion of the merger and is aimed at creating a leaner organisation by removing overlapping positions created when the two mobile operators combined.
The review is expected to affect several key divisions, including sales, marketing, finance, human resources, technology, customer support and administrative functions.
The process is likely to continue over the coming weeks as the company aligns its structure with future operational requirements, reports said, citing sources familiar to the development.
Before the merger, Telenor Pakistan had a workforce of around 800 employees. Hundreds of Ufone staff have already been relocated to the merged company’s headquarters, with additional transfers expected as integration activities continue.
Reports citing insiders estimate claimed that the combined organisation may eventually reduce its headcount by roughly 300 to 500 employees to bring staffing levels more in line with operational needs and industry benchmarks.
Employees leaving the company are unlikely to receive separation packages comparable to those offered during previous telecom mergers. Instead, the compensation under consideration is said to be more modest, consisting of only a limited number of months’ salary.
The restructuring has already begun influencing staffing decisions, with at least one senior employee reportedly resigning after an internal selection process for a leadership position in the merged entity.
A senior official told local publication declined to confirmed any plans to layoff the employees.
