Mayor Karachi and Chairman Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) Barrister MurtazaWahab visited the Jamila Pumping Station along with the Chief Executive Officer of the KWSC Engineer Syed Salahuddin Ahmed to inspect maintenance work on the line on Monday. A 36-inch sewerage line of the Jamila Pumping Station at the Mirza Adam Khan Road sunk down on Saturday.

During the visit, Mayor Karachi Karam Allah Waqasi and Chief Engineer Sewerage AftabAlamChandio were also present. The mayor Karachi said  that the Jamila Pumping Station was built in 1836 and now it needs reconstruction.

He said that the provincial government will be include the restoration works of the the station in the Annual Development Plan and funds would  be allocated in the upcoming budget for the construction of a new pumping station. He further mentioned that they would  soon address the issues with the sewerage system in the Old City area of Karachi. During the visit, the CEO Water Corporation briefed the mayor about the maintenance work, stating that the line at the pumping station got clogged three times in the past ten days.

The main reason for the blockage is that the main line has completed its life cycle, and after completing repairs twice, it got clogged again. He explained that to provide an alternative solution, a bypass line is being installed in the Liyari River, and the repair work on the bypass line would be completed within the next 72 hours. He also added that the bypass line is 120 feet long and 20 feet deep, making the maintenance work challenging due to the presence of water and gas lines above the deep and rising main.

He further mentioned that due to the blockages in the rising main, the pumps at the Jamila Pumping Station are being affected repeatedly, causing inconvenience to areas like Old City, Ram Swami, Ranchore Line, Jamila Street, Kalakot, Jinnahabad, and Malir Colony.
