Today, on Labour Day, we pay tribute to the great sacrifices made by workers across the world. Workers have played a vital role in securing their rights through continuous struggle.
The events that took place in Chicago in 1886 remind us of the sacrifices made by brave workers who raised their voices for their rights. We honour those who sacrificed their lives and reaffirm our commitment to ensuring workers’ rights around the world. Workers in Pakistan continue to strive for their rightful rights even today.
The importance of workers in the development of any country cannot be denied. In Pakistan, sectors such as economy, industry, and agriculture stand on the shoulders of our workers. It is encouraging that Pakistan’s workforce is increasingly being recognised globally.
We have taken effective steps at both national and international levels to protect workers’ rights. Pakistan’s collaboration with the International Labour Organization has been instrumental in ensuring fundamental rights for workers.
We are also making continuous efforts to achieve sustainable development goals, particularly those related to employment, economic growth, and the protection of workers’ rights.
Despite the evolving challenges of the modern world, our commitment remains strong and unwavering.
The Government of Pakistan has taken practical steps to safeguard workers’ rights, ensure their welfare, and improve working conditions. These measures are not only socially necessary but also ethically essential.
The Ministry of Overseas Pakistanis and Human Resource Development has taken key initiatives for the welfare and protection of workers. Notably, the Employees’ Old-Age Benefits Institution (EOBI) pension has been increased from PKR 8,500 to PKR 10,000. Additionally, the minimum wage has been raised from PKR 32,000 to PKR 40,000, and several allowances have also been increased.
Further, steps have been taken to improve workplace conditions, ensure occupational safety, and enhance transparency in labour inspections. Efforts are underway to modernise systems, including the introduction of online platforms and digital processes to improve service delivery.
Special focus is being placed on improving working conditions in industrial sectors and protecting workers from exploitation through better regulation and enforcement.
Our vision is to create a society where workers are respected, protected, and empowered. Ensuring workers’ rights is not only a national responsibility but also essential for sustainable economic growth.
On this Labour Day, I pay tribute to the hardworking people of Pakistan and reaffirm the government’s commitment to ensuring their welfare and protection. We will continue to take steps to strengthen labour rights and promote social justice.
