Chief Minister of Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif on Monday chaired the fifth consecutive meeting on the provision of clean drinking water, reviewing proposed measures for ensuring water supply in vari-ous districts of Punjab.
The meeting reviewed water supply pipeline projects in Chakwal, Rawalpindi, Rajanpur, Faisalabad, Murree and Attock. It agreed in principle to prioritise water supply to eight water-scarce villages in Chakwal.
A proposal for pilot water supply projects in Rajanpur, Jampur, Chak Shigari and Dajal was also considered. The meeting agreed to launch a pilot project to provide drinking water in Chak Jhumra and sub-urban areas of Faisalabad. The chief minister directed the authorities to compile and verify reliable da-ta on water requirements according to population. She ordered the immediate provision of 21 water bowsers in Rajanpur and directed the authorities to expedite beautification and other development projects in Rojhan.
She also ordered the provision of water tanks for drinking water supply in Murree and directed work on a new water source in the hill station.
The Punjab Clean Water Authority and deputy commissioners gave detailed briefings on the water supply situation and ongoing projects in the districts. The meeting was informed that Chakwal has 32 functional water filtration plants, while 237 are under construction.
Rawalpindi has 246 existing water filtration plants, while 252 new plants are to be installed. Attock has 77 existing filtration plants, 399 under completion and nine model villages planned. Rajanpur has 146 existing filtration plants, with 191 under completion. Twelve model villages and one model village are also planned there. Murree has five existing water filtration plants, while 90 are under completion.
Faisalabad has 343 existing filtration plants, four surface water treatment plants and 180 filtration plants under completion. The chief minister said her commitment to providing clean drinking water to the people remained unwavering.
“We will not rest until clean drinking water is provided to the people of Punjab at their doorsteps,” she said. She said areas where people were forced to carry water on their shoulders had been included among the government’s priorities.
