ISLAMABAD – As 2026 draws to close, Islamabad’s roads are bracing for a busy stretch. With construction work underway and traffic expected to swell, capital authorities stepped in with a decisive move, restricting some vehicles from entering the capital during peak hours.
The country’s federal capital is set to see strict traffic controls as authorities impose a 5-day ban on heavy vehicles entering the metropolis from December 27 to December 31, citing major road development work and an expected surge in traffic ahead of New Year celebrations.
According to Islamabad Traffic Police, all types of heavy traffic will remain suspended from entering city daily between 3:00 pm and 8:00 pm from December 27 Saturday, to December 3,0 Tuesday.
On New Year’s Eve, December 31, the restriction will be extended, remaining in force from 3:00 pm until midnight.

Officials say the move aims to prevent gridlock during peak hours as construction activity continues across the city and traffic volumes increase with year-end movement.
To ensure smooth flow and minimize inconvenience, Islamabad Traffic Police officers will be deployed at key points and along major roads to guide commuters and manage traffic during the restriction period.
Authorities urged transporters and drivers to plan their routes and timings accordingly, warning that strict enforcement will be carried out to keep traffic moving smoothly during the busy New Year period.
