ISLAMABAD – Lieutenant General Aamer Raza, Chief of the General Staff of Pakistan Army, has been promoted to the rank of “Four-Star General”.
It was announced by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, adding that Gen Aamer will be the first Commander of “National Strategic Command”.
A new military position, Commander National Strategic Command, has been established following the approval of amendments to the Pakistan Army, Air Force and Navy laws in 2025. The same legal framework also introduced the role of Chief of Defence Forces, assigned to Field Marshal Asim Munir.
The new arrangement replaced the previous system in which the Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee served as the senior coordinating military post. General Shamshad Mirza was the last officer to occupy the CJCSC position before its removal.
The amended legislation allows the prime minister to select the National Strategic Command commander from among serving army generals.
The appointment will remain valid for three years and will be made after recommendations from the Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces.
