Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif has announced the promotion of Chief of the General Staff of Pakistan Army, Lieutenant General Aamer Raza, to the rank of “Four-Star General”.
He has also announced his appointment as first “Commander National Strategic Command”.
Aamer Raza, a senior Pakistan Army officer, served as Chief of General Staff at General Headquarters (GHQ), Rawalpindi, before his promotion.
Raza was commissioned into the Pakistan Army’s 6th Lancers in 1988. Over the course of his career, he has held several key command and staff positions, including serving as Commander of IV Corps, Lahore, and Chairman of Heavy Industries Taxila.
He received professional military education from the Command and Staff College, Quetta, and the National Defence University (NDU), Islamabad. He also holds a degree in International Relations from the University of Nottingham, along with advanced qualifications in warfare and strategic studies from NDU.
During his military service, Raza commanded the 6th Lancers from 2007 to 2009. He also led an armoured brigade, an infantry brigade in South Waziristan and an infantry division. In addition to field assignments, he served in important staff roles, including Chief of Staff at II Corps and Director General of the Weapons and Equipment Directorate.
Raza has also contributed to military training and education, serving as an instructor at the School of Armour and Mechanized Warfare, Director of the Faculty of Research and Doctrinal Studies, and Chief Instructor at the Command and Staff College, Quetta.
In April 2020, he took charge of Heavy Industries Taxila. He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant General in October 2022 and was later appointed Commander of IV Corps, Lahore, in May 2023.
Following his promotion to the rank of four-star general, Raza was appointed Commander of the National Strategic Command, marking another significant responsibility in his military career.
