LONDON – London Mayor Sadiq Khan on Friday announced major changes to the city’s congestion charge system, the local UK media reported.
The mayor ended the full exemption previously granted to electric vehicles, meaning that from today, electric cars would also be subject to the congestion charge.
The new discounted system would take effect from January 2, 2026.
Under the updated rules, the registration with Auto Pay is mandatory to avail discounts.
The electric cars would receive a 25% discount while larger electric vans and vehicles would be eligible for a 50% discount. The daily congestion charges have been increased from £15 to £18, with late payments rising up to £21, reported the local media.
Mayor Sadiq Khan commented on the changes, saying that “Reducing traffic is essential for the economy, and the cleaner vehicle discount was always intended to be temporary.”
