Saudi King Salman has strongly condemned Yemen’s Houthis, describing them as a “terrorist militia” following an alleged attack targeting the holy city of Makkah last week.
In a rare statement, the 90-year-old monarch commended Saudi Arabia’s armed forces and security agencies for protecting the kingdom and denounced the alleged Houthi attempt to strike Makkah.
According to the official Saudi Press Agency, King Salman described the reported targeting of the holy city as a provocation against Muslims worldwide.
The remarks came amid heightened tensions involving the Houthis and Saudi Arabia, with the kingdom reiterating its condemnation of any threat to its territory and Islamic holy sites.
Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman by phone on Tuesday, discussing security developments in the Gulf and the importance of keeping key international waterways open.
The Kremlin said the leaders conducted a comprehensive review of the situation in the Middle East and stressed that resolving regional disputes through political and diplomatic means remains the only workable option.
Putin and Mohammed bin Salman also called for a rapid halt to fighting in Yemen as the country faces worsening military and political tensions.
