ISLAMABAD – Chief Justice of Pakistan Qazi Faez Isa on Wednesday observed that the Kalashnikovs culture must be ended in the country.
The CJP passed the order while hearing a case related to the bail of a nominated accused in a theft case, revealing insights into the concerning issue of weapon possession.
During the hearing, CJP expressed his dismay over the lack of inquiry into the possession of weapons, including two Kalashnikovs and a pistol, from the accused’s residence.
The top judge raised the issue of the destructive impact of drugs and Kalashnikovs on Pakistan, saying that, “We need to end the Kalashnikov culture in Pakistan,”.
Highlighting the alarming trend of individuals flaunting Kalashnikovs in high-profile vehicles with tinted glass, CJP Isa stressed the urgency of putting an end to this phenomenon. The chief justice remarked, “People carrying Kalashnikovs in schools and markets are frightening. If they are afraid, they should stay at home.”
The CJP questioned the Interior Minister’s role in issuing licenses for such weapons and proposed taking action against those involved in the process.
The top court approved the bail of the accused, Kashif against surety bond of Rs.50,000.
Furthermore, the court also sought detailed information from authorities regarding the issuance of licenses for prohibited weapons. The notice were issued to the Interior Secretary, all Secretaries of the Interior Ministry, all IGs, Attorney General, and Provincial Advocates General.
