Amid a notable increase in street crimes across metropolis, the Sindh government has made the decision to remove the current Karachi police chief, according to insider sources. The incoming fourth consecutive PPP government has opted to replace Additional IG Karachi, Imran Yaqoob, a mere 15 days after his appointment to the prestigious position. JavedAlamOdho, who previously served as Karachi police chief, emerges as the top contender to succeed Yaqoob.

This decision comes after KhadimHussain Rind was appointed as the new Karachi Additional Inspector General of Police (AIG) by the caretaker Sindh government in September 2023. Presenting statistics to the CM last month, the then Inspector General of Police (IGP) RiffatMukhtar revealed that in the past two months alone, 23 fatalities occurred during robberies, with 3953 mobile phones, 46 four-wheelers, and 1537 two-wheelers reported as snatched.

Responding to inquiries, the IGP informed the CM that street crimes were particularly prevalent within the jurisdiction of 22 police stations in Karachi. In response, the CM directed the IGP to furnish a list of these 22 vulnerable police stations, identifying hotspots to prioritize special attention. Murad Ali Shah, the Chief Minister, instructed the city police chief to deploy all SSPs on the streets during the evening hours. Emphasizing that street crimes mostly occur after sunset, the CM urged the police to ensure a visible presence on the roads to curb criminal activities.
