ISLAMABAD – Petrol prices continue to surge, adding strain to already stretched household budgets, but federal government has stepped in with relief as public transport is now free for residents of Islamabad and Punjab, allowing commuters to save money while navigating the ongoing fuel crisis.
As people are bearing brunt of fuel hike, the federal government announced that all public transport in Islamabad will be free for the next 30 days. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi confirmed the initiative, which will take effect tomorrow under the direct orders of the Prime Minister.
Ministry of Interior will shoulder Rs350 million expenditure for this unprecedented relief measure, described by officials as a significant step to ease household expenses and encourage greater use of public transport.
Naqvi said the government is committed to supporting citizens during extraordinary circumstances. “We will not abandon the public in difficult times. Citizens should use public transport instead of personal vehicles. The war has triggered a global economic crisis, and once the situation improves, we will continue efforts to relieve people from financial pressures,” he stated.
This decision follows Punjab’s recent move under Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, which made public transport free across the province, including the Orange Line Train, Metro Bus, Speedo Bus, and Green Electric Bus. Observers say Islamabad’s initiative now provides similar relief to the federal capital, offering residents a rare respite amid nationwide austerity measures.
Commuters have welcomed the announcement, calling it a timely intervention that will not only reduce household costs but also promote reliance on public transportation. Analysts note that such measures could have a long-term impact, encouraging more sustainable commuting habits while providing immediate financial relief to citizens struggling with rising expenses.
