ISLAMABAD – US-Iran confrontation has taken a new geopolitical twist as suspicions emerge over a possible Russian role in helping Tehran target US facilities, including CIA-linked locations across the Gulf region.
The escalating confrontation between Tehran and US taken dramatic turn as fresh intelligence concerns suggest the Kremlin may be playing a hidden role in helping Tehran improve the accuracy of attacks against American targets in the Middle East.
The issue surfaced as US Secretary of State Marco Rubio met Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Manila on the sidelines of a Southeast Asian summit, where the Ukraine war was officially the main topic of discussion. However, behind closed doors, growing suspicions over Moscow’s possible support for Iran added another major point of tension between Washington and the Kremlin.
US intelligence agencies are reportedly examining whether Russia provided assistance that helped Iran carry out more precise strikes against American facilities, including CIA-linked locations.
The controversy began after reports emerged during the early days of the US-Israel conflict with Iran that Iranian attacks had targeted sensitive American positions. A report by The Washington Post claimed that a CIA facility inside the US Embassy compound in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, was targeted, while CNN later reported that US intelligence assessments pointed toward possible Russian assistance in helping Tehran track American personnel and aircraft in the Gulf.
The latest concerns intensified after reports saying that Iranian drone attacks on CIA-linked facilities prompted a US intelligence review into whether Moscow contributed intelligence or technology that improved the effectiveness of the strikes.
The precision of Iran’s attacks has raised eyebrows as Iranian operations appeared more advanced than previous capabilities. Russia’s superior space-based intelligence and satellite capabilities could provide Tehran with major advantage, as Iran lacks comparable military-grade surveillance resources.
Iran is not solely dependent on Russian support. Tehran has built a powerful regional intelligence network and has developed its own missile and drone programmes over years.
Russia and Iran’s relationship has strengthened significantly since Moscow launched its invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Tehran supplied Russia with advanced weaponry, including Shahed drones and Fateh-110 ballistic missiles, which played a role in Russia’s military campaign. The two countries later signed a 20-year Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Treaty aimed at expanding cooperation, including defence ties. However, Russian officials stressed that the agreement did not create a formal military alliance or guarantee direct military assistance.
The two countries have also signed a long-term strategic partnership agreement covering security, energy, and economic cooperation. However, Russia has made clear that the deal does not represent a NATO-style alliance or guarantee direct military support in case of war.
On the US-Israel conflict with Iran, Moscow positioned itself as a critic of Trump’s military actions, accusing US and its allies of destabilising the Middle East and using force to maintain global influence. Russia presents Iran as a country resisting Western pressure and uses the conflict to promote its broader argument for a “multipolar world” where US dominance is challenged.
However, Russia’s support for Iran has limits. While Moscow benefits from a stronger Iran that can counter US influence, it does not want a wider regional war that could damage its interests or force direct confrontation with Washington. Iran is important to Russia because it helps challenge American influence, provides military cooperation, offers energy partnership opportunities, and strengthens Moscow’s influence in the Middle East.
