ISLAMABAD – Iranian Minister for Interior Eskandar Momeni is arriving in Pakistan today for high-level talks with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir, as Islamabad and Tehran seek to deepen bilateral cooperation amid renewed diplomatic efforts to ease tensions between Iran and US.
Pakistan found itself at the heart of intensifying regional diplomacy again, raising speculation over Islamabad’s growing role in efforts to ease tensions between Tehran and Washington.
Momeni is visiting Pakistan at the invitation of Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi. During the trip, he is expected to hold key meetings with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir, and Mohsin Naqvi to discuss a wide range of bilateral and regional issues.
The agenda includes expanding regional security, border cooperation and deepening strategic coordination between the two neighboring countries at a time of mounting geopolitical uncertainty.
The visit comes amid renewed diplomatic activity involving Iran and the United States, with Iran’s Foreign Ministry officially confirming Momeni’s arrival. The timing has intensified speculation that Islamabad is increasingly being viewed as a trusted diplomatic channel capable of facilitating regional dialogue.
Pakistan’s diplomatic engagement with Tehran gained momentum in recent months. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has made several visits to Iran, with reports suggesting his efforts helped establish communication that led to the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). Separate reports have also claimed Pakistan played a mediating role in discussions held in Switzerland aimed at reducing tensions between Tehran and Washington.
Diplomatic efforts are also continuing behind the scenes, with third-party mediators reportedly proposing a 10-day ceasefire between Iran and the United States. The initiative is said to be aimed at lowering tensions and creating space for negotiations on an interim understanding between the two sides.
