Iran has urged countries to keep the protection of Islamic holy sites free from political exploitation, warning that such issues should not be used to inflame disputes or worsen regional tensions.
In a post on X on Thursday, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei condemned any aggression against Islamic holy sites, particularly Makkah, Madinah and Al-Aqsa Mosque, as well as any action that could endanger pilgrims or residents.
His remarks followed a claim by the military coalition supporting Yemen’s internationally recognised government that it had intercepted and destroyed a drone allegedly launched by the Houthis before it could enter Makkah’s airspace.
The Houthis have denied targeting Makkah with a drone.
Baghaei said the mere claim that a drone heading towards Makkah had been intercepted did not provide sufficient grounds to blame any specific party.
He also alleged that several “false flag” operations had been carried out in the region in recent months, claiming they were intended to divert public attention from actions by Israel and the United States and create divisions among Islamic countries.
Baghaei called for caution and vigilance while assessing such claims.
