Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri has expressed concerns over the growing use of artificial intelligence (AI) in photography, warning that it is becoming increasingly difficult to verify the authenticity of images.
In a recent Instagram post, Mosseri stated that AI-generated photos are rapidly increasing, making it challenging to distinguish between real and AI-created images.
He highlighted that the platform is facing a major challenge as the world is changing rapidly, and Instagram has struggled to keep pace with these developments.
“Due to AI, it has become almost impossible for people to differentiate between genuine and AI-generated images,” Mosseri said. He added that as AI images become more realistic over time, it is crucial for both users and Instagram to adapt to this change.
Mosseri noted that it could take years for people to accept that an image before their eyes may not be real, explaining that humans are genetically wired to trust what they see.
He also mentioned that the solution to this challenge may come in the form of a “real media” label, helping users identify authentic content.
Instagram plans to develop tools that allow users to counter AI-generated content. AI content will be clearly labeled, while original content will receive improved ranking on the platform.
“Instagram must evolve rapidly to address this situation,” Mosseri added.
