LAHORE – Police have detained three sisters of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan as part of a reported crackdown ahead of the party’s planned September 27 protest.
Imran Khan’s sisters Noreen Niazi and Uzma Khan were taken into custody along with family members during late-night police action. The detainees were reportedly shifted from the residence of Aleema Khan in an armoured vehicle to an undisclosed location.
Children and other family members who had also been detained were released, while Noreen Niazi and Uzma Khan were transferred to Kot Lakhpat Jail.
The two women were reportedly detained under Maintenance of Public Order (MPO) orders for 30 days on grounds related to a perceived risk of a breach of peace.
Earlier, police had arrested Imran Khan’s sister Aleema Khan while she was travelling from Upper Mall towards Gymkhana. She was subsequently transferred to Kot Lakhpat Jail.
According to the information provided by sources, Lytton Road police detained Aleema Khan under a 3-MPO order. Her personal vehicle was taken to Mozang Police Station.
The reported arrests come as security measures have been intensified in Lahore ahead of the September 27 PTI protest.
Separately, Hajra Niazi, the daughter of Noreen Niazi, and her husband were also reportedly stopped at a police checkpoint near Aleema Khan’s residence and taken into custody. They were moved to different police stations and were later released after being held for some time.
