LAHORE – The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has clarified the simple procedure for individuals seeking to update their marital status and remove the name of their former spouse from NADRA records after a divorce.
NADRA has issued an important clarification for citizens who want to change their marital status from “married” to “divorced” on their National Identity Cards and other records.
According to NADRA, the process for updating the marital status is straightforward, but certain steps must be followed.
Step-by-Step Guide to Update Marital Status After Divorce
First, individuals need to obtain an official divorce or khula certificate from a family court or mediation committee.
Afterward, they must visit the Union Council where the marriage was initially registered and submit an application for a divorce certificate.
The application requires the names of both parties, the date of divorce, copies of their identity cards, and witness information.
Once this process is complete, the Union Council will issue the divorce certificate.
However, NADRA has clarified that both men and women must individually submit their computerized divorce certificates to NADRA offices to update their marital status in the system.
The update to marital status will only occur after the verification of official documents, ensuring the accuracy of national records and compliance with legal requirements.
This clarification comes after a citizen raised a concern on social media, stating that despite receiving a divorce certificate from the Union Council, their ex-spouse’s name remained listed as “wife” in NADRA records.
