Sindh government is committed to promoting medical tourism, with support for the private sector, to enhance the local healthcare industry and strengthen its role in the national economy. Provincial Health Minister Dr. AzraPechuho made this statement while addressing the opening ceremony of the 21st Health Asia Exhibition and Conferences on Thursday.
Dr. Pechuho highlighted the government’s pivotal role in the healthcare system, emphasizing that public sector hospitals, especially in Karachi, provide quality treatment not only to locals but also to overseas Pakistanis and expatriates. She noted that foreign delegates and exhibitors participating in the event are a positive indicator for the healthcare industry’s growth, adding that the private sector’s role is essential and commendable. Discussing the recent outbreak of viral diseases in Karachi, including malaria, dengue, and chikungunya, Dr. Pechuho acknowledged the high number of affected citizens. She stressed that while there are no vaccines for these diseases, prevention through mosquito control efforts such as spray drives is critical. The provincial government, she said, plans to collaborate with local authorities to tackle these health challenges. Dr. Pechuho also spoke about the ongoing battle against polio, expressing optimism that the disease could be eradicated in Pakistan and neighboring Afghanistan, given its roots in the region. She further addressed the resurgence of diphtheria, emphasizing the need to boost vaccination coverage across Sindh to curb the disease. During the conference session titled “Future Hospital,” health experts and hospital administrators echoed the call for promoting medical tourism.
Dr. Abdul Bari, CEO of Indus Health Network, underscored that Pakistani hospitals offer quality treatment comparable to international standards, serving both local and overseas patients. However, he stressed that improving the country’s security situation, particularly in major cities, is key to attracting more foreign patients. Arshad QaimKhani, CEO of the Prime Minister’s Health Program, emphasized that providing high-quality, affordable treatment is vital for boosting medical tourism. He called on the government to enhance logistical and security measures to attract expatriates and foreign visitors.
He also highlighted the need to improve the image of Pakistan’s healthcare sector and market its services globally. Farhan Anis, Project Director of the Health Asia Exhibition and Conferences, said that the participation of local experts and foreign delegates will help the sector address challenges and raise standards. He also noted that local companies showcased high-tech, made-in-Pakistan medical equipment, signaling progress and innovation in the healthcare industry.
