ISLAMABAD – The federal government has termed the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) Governance and Corruption Diagnostic (GCD) Report a “charge sheet” against both the government and parliament, announcing that a comprehensive action plan to address its findings will be prepared by December 31.
Separate meetings of the Senate and National Assembly standing committees on finance were held at Parliament House to review the IMF report in detail.
Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb briefed lawmakers on the 15 key recommendations made by the Fund regarding governance gaps, corruption risks, taxation weaknesses, regulatory shortcomings and the need to strengthen the rule of law.
The Senate finance committee had initially summoned the minister for a briefing, but he could not attend due to another engagement. He later appeared before the National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Finance, chaired by Naveed Qamar.
The officials informed the committee that the government has accepted the IMF’s diagnosis and will develop a short-, medium-, and long-term implementation plan spanning six months, 18 months and 36 months. The complete action plan will be finalised by December 31, 2025.
Aurangzeb told the committee that all 15 recommendations would be incorporated in the upcoming plan, adding that the government also intends to make the assets of all government officers publicly accessible online next year to enhance transparency.
