ISLAMABAD – Pakistan’s digital ambitions get major boost as Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif officially inaugurated Google’s office in the country, opening the door to potentially deeper cooperation with one of the world’s biggest technology companies.
The development is expansion of search engine’s engagement with Pakistan’s rapidly evolving technology ecosystem and comes as Islamabad seeks to capitalize on its young, increasingly tech-savvy population.

Welcoming a Google delegation at the ceremony, Prime Minister Shehbaz described the company as a potentially key partner in Pakistan’s digital transformation. He called for stronger cooperation to accelerate technological development, promote innovation and strengthen digital governance.
The prime minister stressed that Pakistan’s youthful population represents a major opportunity for the country to build its technology sector and urged greater collaboration with leading global technology companies.
The ceremony was attended by Google Vice President Wilson L. White and Natalie A. Baker, Deputy Chief of Mission at the US Embassy in Islamabad.
The opening of the office could mark a new chapter in Google-Pakistan relations, with potential collaboration spanning digital skills, innovation and technology-driven economic growth.
For Pakistan, the move comes at a time when the government is increasingly looking toward technology, digital services and a skilled young workforce as key drivers of future economic expansion.
The opening also draws a clear line between Google’s latest move and its earlier presence in Pakistan. The company established a liaison office in 2022 after registering with the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan. That setup was primarily intended for promotional activities technical assistance and exploring business opportunities and was not a fully operational corporate office.
The development puts to rest earlier claims dating back to around 2020 that Google had already opened its first office in Pakistan. Those reports were linked to a reseller outlet rather than an official Google corporate facility.
Google’s deeper entry into Pakistan comes as the country looks to accelerate its digital transformation and capitalize on its young technology-focused population. The company has also highlighted its economic contribution to Pakistan and announced one year of free Gemini subscriptions for Pakistani students.
