SYDNEY – Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell on Monday officially announced his retirement from One Day International (ODI) cricket, bringing an end to a career that spanned over a decade and featured numerous memorable performances in the 50-over format.
Cricket Australia said that Maxwell decided to shift his full focus to the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup, where he would continue to represent Australia in the shortest format of the game.
Maxwell, 35, played 149 ODI matches for Australia, amassed 3,990 runs with an aggressive and unorthodox batting style that made him one of the most exciting players in world cricket.
In addition to his batting, he also contributed significantly with his off-spin bowling and electric fielding.
Speaking on his decision, Maxwell said he had a comprehensive discussion with Chief Selector George Bailey before arriving at the conclusion.
“My ODI career has been full of ups and downs, but it’s been an incredible journey. I’m proud of what I’ve achieved and grateful for the opportunities,” he stated.
Maxwell’s decision comes at a time when Australia is preparing to build a more specialized squad for the T20 format. His retirement from ODIs is seen as a strategic move to prolong his career in T20 cricket, where he remains a key player for both the national team and various franchise leagues around the world.
Maxwell last played ODI cricket during Australia’s successful 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup campaign, where he delivered one of the greatest innings in ODI history—an unbeaten double century against Afghanistan.
