ISLAMABAD – Pakistan and US seek to deepen their longstanding partnership, and a high-level meeting in Islamabad brought key areas of cooperation back into the spotlight.
Amid improving cooperation between the two sides, US Consul General Stetson Sanders called on Chairman of the Senate Syed Yousaf Raza Gillani, where both sides held detailed discussions on Pakistan–United States bilateral relations, with a particular focus on trade, investment, and the evolving regional situation.
Chairman Senate Syed Yousaf Raza Gillani reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to further strengthening its longstanding relations with the United States. He emphasized that Pakistan places high importance on ties based on mutual respect, shared interests, and constructive cooperation.
He stressed need to enhance cooperation in multiple sectors, including trade, information technology, energy, minerals, agriculture, education, and health. The Chairman Senate noted that Pakistan warmly welcomes American investment and highly values the contribution of American companies operating within the country.
US remains a key economic partner for Pakistan and continues to be the largest market for Pakistani exports, he said, shedding light on importance of expanding bilateral economic and trade relations to broader and more diversified areas.
Discussing regional developments, Yousaf Raza Gillani highlighted the importance of diplomacy and dialogue for ensuring peace and stability in the region. He reiterated Pakistan’s desire to maintain positive, constructive, and mutually respectful relations with all countries in the region.
Chairman Senate also expressed concern over recent Indian actions related to the Indus Waters Treaty, stating that the use of water as a tool of political pressure or coercion could pose a serious threat to regional peace and stability. He stressed the importance of respecting international laws and existing agreements.
Both sides agreed on the need to further strengthen parliamentary relations between Pakistan and the United States and to increase exchanges of parliamentary delegations. On this occasion, Chairman Senate also highlighted that the Pakistani diaspora in the United States is playing a vital role as a strong bridge between the two countries, while people-to-people contacts remain a key pillar of Pakistan–U.S. relations.
