ZURICH – FIFA has launched a formal disciplinary investigation into Argentina following a post-match altercation after the 2026 FIFA World Cup final, where Spain defeated Argentina 1-0 to claim the world title.
In a statement, the world football governing body said it has appointed a disciplinary and ethics prosecutor to investigate the incidents that occurred after the final whistle, when tensions escalated between players and officials from both teams.
The investigation will examine the actions of several Argentine players and coaching staff members, including Nahuel Molina, Leandro Paredes, Thiago Almada, and assistant coach Roberto Ayala, who were reportedly involved in the confrontation.
FIFA said disciplinary action could be taken against any individuals found to have breached its regulations. Possible sanctions include match suspensions, fines or other penalties. The Argentine Football Association (AFA) could also face disciplinary measures if the inquiry finds the federation responsible for any violations.
The governing body clarified that although Leandro Paredes was initially reported to have been shown a red card after the match, the dismissal was later removed from the official record. Consequently, no immediate disciplinary action has been imposed on the midfielder.
During the final, Argentine midfielder Enzo Fernández was sent off after receiving two yellow cards.
FIFA is also investigating Argentina in a separate disciplinary case related to the team’s World Cup semi-final victory over England, after players displayed a political banner referring to the Falkland Islands during the post-match celebrations.
Argentina has previously faced sanctions from FIFA over player misconduct and controversial celebrations.
Under FIFA’s disciplinary regulations, players, team officials or national football associations found guilty of conduct that undermines the integrity of the game or violates standards of sportsmanship may face fines, suspensions or other disciplinary measures following the conclusion of the investigation.
