LAHORE – The Punjab Excise Department has recommended a change in the number plates for large SUVs and vehicles in order to improve visibility of registration numbers.
The existing smaller number plates on larger vehicles have not provided clear visibility of registration numbers.
To address this issue, Additional Director-General Rizwan Sherani has instructed the creation of a new design, taking into account security features and the capabilities of the Safe City cameras.
The new number plates are set to be more visible, with a color scheme replacing the traditional black and white.
The design will incorporate advanced security measures to enhance vehicle identification. Once the new design is approved, the Excise Department will begin the necessary regulatory procedures.
Meanwhile, Pakistan’s rising number of hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) has significantly reduced fuel imports, saving the country $27 million over the last two years.
With over 30,000 hybrid vehicles now on Pakistani roads, the move has not only saved approximately 3 million liters of fuel but has also had a positive impact on the national economy by cutting down on oil import costs.
The growing market for hybrid vehicles, which now accounts for more than 50% of the sports utility vehicle (SUV) segment, is contributing to a greener and more energy-efficient transportation sector. Muhammad Faisal, CEO of Lucky Motor Corporation (LMC), stated that if hybrid vehicles account for 25-30% of total vehicle sales, fuel savings could increase substantially.
Pakistan’s automotive market, including cars, vans, SUVs, and pickups, traditionally sells around 180,000 to 200,000 units annually.
Since 2021, the country has introduced 13 new electric vehicle models, with 9 of these being hybrids from Korean, Chinese, and Japanese manufacturers.
