ISLAMABAD – The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Tuesday officially announced the schedule for the upcoming local body elections in the federal capital, Islamabad.
The elections would be conducted in accordance with the Local Government Act of 2015, marking an important step towards empowering local governance in the city.
According to the ECP’s official notification, the local body elections in Islamabad will take place on 15th February 2024.
The nomination process for candidates will begin on 22nd December and will continue until 27th December. Following this, the scrutiny of the nomination papers will take place from 30th December 2023 to 3rd January 2024. Once the scrutiny process is completed, candidates will be allotted their election symbols on 16th January 2024.
In addition, the ECP has appointed Irfan Nawaz Memon, the Deputy Commissioner of Islamabad, as the District Returning Officer (DRO) for the local body elections.
The elections will be held across 125 union councils in Islamabad, with voters selecting representatives for local governance. The Election Commission has called on all political parties and prospective candidates to ensure their preparations are in place well ahead of the election date.
This marks a significant development in the process of local government elections in Islamabad, as the city has not held such elections in recent years. The ECP is expected to closely monitor the election process to ensure its transparency and fairness.
