MELBOURNE – The England Cricket Board (ECB) on Tuesday assured that it would investigate reports of excessive alcohol consumption by England players during their recent holidays in Queensland.
ECB Managing Director Rob Key confirmed that the board would thoroughly review the matter.
Ahead of the Adelaide Test, England players spent their holidays at the popular coastal destination Noosa. Reports emerged suggesting that some players indulged in heavy drinking during their stay.
Speaking to the media, Rob Key said, “We will examine the situation to determine the facts. If players did consume excessive alcohol, it will be addressed appropriately.”
He added, “Excessive drinking is not expected of an international cricket team. England players are known for their good conduct, and I have been informed that their behavior during the holidays was generally responsible.”
Key also commented, “If the reports of players’ behavior and drinking are accurate, it is unacceptable. I am not opposed to the Noosa trip, provided the activities remain responsible, such as visiting the beach rather than misusing phones or other privileges.”
On questions regarding criticism of Head Coach Brendon McCullum following England’s consecutive three-Test Ashes defeats, Key expressed support, saying, “McCullum is a competent coach, and his record in Test cricket is strong.”
