JEHLUM – A strong earthquake jolted parts of Punjab, and killed at least one person while nearly a dozen injured in Jhelum’s Pind Dadan Khan tehsil on Tuesday evening.
The earthquake struck Jalalpur Sharif area at around 7:05pm, triggering panic among residents as tremors were felt across several parts of the district and nearby areas of Punjab.
Local authorities said nearly 10 houses suffered serious damage in the affected localities. He confirmed that one teenage boy died in the incident, while rescue teams shifted the injured to nearby medical facilities.
Met Office also shared update, saying earthquake measured 4.8 in magnitude and occurred at a depth of 12 kilometres. The epicentre was located approximately 58 kilometres southwest of Jhelum. Rescue 1122 officials said emergency calls were received shortly after the tremors regarding the collapse of a house structure in Pind Dadan Khan. Rescue teams reached the site within minutes and launched operations to retrieve people trapped under the debris.
Police, district administration officials and emergency responders remained present in the affected areas late into the evening as search and damage assessment operations continued.
Residents reported feeling tremors in Sagharpur, Daryala Jalip, Haranpur and Jaitypur, while preliminary reports suggested that Jalalpur Sharif and Pindi Saidpur were among the worst-affected areas.
