Each district municipal corporation (DMC) will get Rs 10 million from the Sindh government for smoothly carrying out the cleaning of their respective areas on Eidul Azha.
Presiding over a meeting, the Sindh Minister for Local Governent nasir Shah said that DMC heads, the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation and other local government departments should be taken on board while devising a strategy regarding the cleaning and disposal of offal on Eidul Azha, assuring the relevant bodies of the provincial government’s complete support on the matter.
He was told the Sindh local government secretary that spots had been allocated for the slaughter of sacrificial animals in each union council. The secretary further stated that preference would be given to treat the waste at the place of slaughter but if this was not possible, the remains would be taken to a landfill site and buried.
The secretary said that a comprehensive and integrated strategy on the disposal of offal had been formulated in consultation with all stakeholders and expressed hope that it would yield good results.
Following the briefing, the provincial minister instructed that the Sindh Solid Waste Management Board (SSWMB) work in liaison with DMC chairpersons, emphasising that only a joint strategy could ensure hassle-free removal of waste on Eid. He further directed the SSWMB managing director to finalise all relevant arrangements in all districts before Eidul Azha, so that the city’s streets were not marred by animal waste.
Then, addressing the Karachi commissioner, the local government minister said that deputy commissioners should visit their areas on a regular basis to encourage citizens to carry out ‘Ijtimai qurbani’ and ensure that filth was quickly removed from the streets.
Mayor Wasim Akhtar has appreciated the launch of a cleanliness drive prior to Eid, saying that it would have lasting results.
