Punjab government has approved a comprehensive development programme for Murree envisaging diverse projects ranging from infrastructure development to provision of basic amenities. It is a long-overdue intervention for an area, which has been neglected for far too long.
Murree, with its picturesque landscapes and charming climate, has always been a prime tourist destination, attracting thousands from across Pakistan. Despite its natural allure, area’s infrastructure has lagged behind, failing to keep up with growing influx of visitors and needs of local residents. The new development plan is a much-needed step to bridge this gap and ensure Murree can sustain its tourism potential while improving quality of life for its inhabitants.
One of the plan’s standout projects is Rawalpindi to Murree Tourist glass train. This initiative promises to revolutionise travel to Murree, offering a fast and scenic route for tourists. This project could significantly reduce traffic congestion that has plagued Murree’s roads, particularly during peak tourist seasons like winter. By providing an efficient and picturesque travel option, this train can also potentially be extended to Muzaffarabad, further enhancing connectivity in the region.
Equally important is the decision to remove high-rise hotel buildings that obstruct natural scenery of Mall Road. Relocating hotels from GPO Chowk to an alternative location is crucial to preserving visual and environmental integrity of Murree. Development that preserves and protects natural beauty of the area is what we need at the moment and it is a matter of satisfaction that Punjab CM Maryam Nawaz is pursuing the same vision.
The development plan extends to road infrastructure as well, with the construction and expansion of old Rawalpindi-Murree-Kashmir Road, creation of temporary parking spaces, and remodelling of key junctions like JhikaGali Chowk. These improvements will enhance accessibility and reduce bottlenecks that have long been a source of frustration for both locals and tourists. Furthermore, beautification projects such as creation of tree houses, camping sites, walkways and terrace parking areas in Bansera Gali Wildlife Park, aim to enhance visitors’ experience while promoting eco-tourism.
The development plan for Murree is a visionary step and it is also for other federating units to initiate such projects that help in promotion of tourism that will bring immense economic dividends.
To further enhance tourism, measures such as improving infrastructure, ensuring safety and security, providing reliable transportation options and preserving natural and cultural heritage are essential. Additionally, marketing campaigns highlighting unique local attractions, festivals and cultural experiences can draw international and domestic tourists. Investing in digital platforms for seamless travel planning, offering diverse and high-quality hospitality services, and facilitating easier visa and travel processes are important to project country’s diverse landscape to the world.
