However, as more people have gained the ability to create content, it has also led to a rise in the spread of fake news. Social media platforms have become fertile ground for those seeking to profit from sensationalism, often at the expense of truth, decency and social stability.
Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi’s announcement of a crackdown on fake news is a necessary and timely step in addressing this escalating issue. Naqvi emphasized the need for accountability, particularly when it comes to social media figures who spread baseless rumours. Misinformation is generated not out of genuine concern but for the sake of attracting views, monetizing clicks and reaping profits. The health scare surrounding PTI founding chairman Imran Khan is just the latest in a long list of incidents where the truth is distorted to suit ulterior motives. Fake news, particularly on platforms like YouTube, often gains traction not because it is true, but because it plays on emotions, fear, outrage and confusion driving people to share it without question. This not only disrupts public peace but also spreads a dangerous culture of distrust. Naqvi’s proposal to strengthen mechanisms for tackling this growing menace is a step in the right direction. True journalism is grounded in facts, integrity and a responsibility to the public, not in sensationalism for personal gain. The government’s firm stance on holding those responsible for spreading fake news is crucial in preserving public trust and stability. However, while the crackdown on fake news is necessary, it is equally important that such actions do not infringe upon the fundamental right to freedom of expression. The government must ensure that in its efforts to regulate harmful content, it does not stifle legitimate discourse or obstruct the work of independent journalists. The line between curbing fake news and censoring genuine criticism is thin and it is vital to maintain a balance. Journalists must continue to be able to report on real issues, voice concerns and highlight injustices without fear of reprisal. Freedom of expression is a cornerstone of any healthy democracy and silencing independent voices can lead to societal unrest and dissatisfaction.
