GLASGOW – The police in Scotland have launched an investigation after several athletes from different countries, including a Pakistani boxer, were reportedly reported missing following the conclusion of the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
Police said some athletes did not return home with their respective teams and efforts were underway to establish their whereabouts. Authorities have also contacted the UK Home Office as part of the inquiry.
The reports suggested that four members of Uganda’s boxing contingent — Nuho Bate, Angel Katushabe, Ibrahim Kems and Emily Nakalima — did not board their scheduled flight home.
Local media reported that one of the boxers said they wanted to remain in Scotland to seek asylum and pursue better training facilities and greater sporting opportunities.
Meanwhile, Pakistani boxer Qudratullah was also reportedly absent from the team’s return journey to Pakistan.
According to reports, when team officials went to his room to locate him, he was not there.
The Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2026 organisers said they were working with Police Scotland, Border Force and UK Visas and Immigration to ensure the safe return of around 3,000 athletes who participated in the Games.
Glasgow previously faced a similar situation following the 2014 Commonwealth Games, when several athletes went missing and some later applied for asylum in the United Kingdom.
