More than 400 people were arrested after clashes erupted between football fans and police across France following Paris Saint-Germain’s (PSG) Champions League final victory over Arsenal.
In Paris, authorities deployed thousands of security personnel to contain the unrest, leading to disruptions in bus, train and rail services throughout the capital.
Fireworks were launched in several areas, while multiple police officers sustained injuries during the disturbances. Riot police also used tear gas in central Paris to disperse crowds gathered in celebration.
France witnessed similar scenes last year when PSG secured the same title. However, Interior Minister Laurent Nunez said officials were better prepared this time, describing the security arrangements as strong and well organised.
Huge crowds flooded the famous Champs-Élysées Avenue shortly after PSG sealed the win in a penalty shootout. Videos circulating online showed flares being ignited, electric motorcycles set ablaze on roads, and at least one shop window being smashed by revellers.
Earlier, confrontations were also reported outside PSG’s Parc des Princes stadium, where fans had assembled to watch the match on giant screens.
Police said the violence resulted in damage to six vehicles, two businesses and a bus stop. By early Sunday morning, authorities had arrested 416 people, including 280 in Paris alone.
Nunez said seven police officers were injured and condemned the violence as entirely unacceptable.
