BEIJING – China successfully conducted a test of a submarine-launched strategic missile, with the missile landing at a designated location in the Pacific Ocean, the Chinese state news agency reported on Monday.
The report said the test missile, equipped with a dummy warhead, struck its planned target area as part of a routine military training programme.
The state news agency said the launch was carried out in accordance with international law and that relevant countries were notified in advance.
It added that the missile test was not aimed at any specific country or target.
Reacting to the launch, Japan said it had been informed about the test beforehand but had urged China to reconsider conducting it.
Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong also confirmed that Australia had been notified in advance, but said ballistic missile tests contribute to regional instability.
