Erin Piacenti was reportedly killed in what authorities described as an apparently unprovoked attack, turning one of New York’s busiest tourist destinations into the scene of a deadly confrontation. Investigators are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the attack, the suspect’s actions and the sequence of events that unfolded before police opened fire.
She worked as Bank of America’s vice president for business selection and conflicts in New York. She was an accomplished professional and graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, where she completed her undergraduate studies in 2016. She later earned her law degree from Fordham Law School in 2021.
Police later confronted the alleged attacker, who was reportedly carrying two large knives. Dramatic footage from the scene appeared to show the woman holding the weapons while moving toward officers.
Authorities reportedly tried to bring the situation under control using Tasers, but the devices failed to stop her.
The confrontation then took a deadly turn. According to the reported account, the woman refused to surrender the knives, allegedly threatened police officers and warned that she would kill them before advancing toward them.
Police opened fire, striking the woman in the chest. She was rushed to a hospital but was later pronounced dead.
Authorities said the suspect had a history of mental illness, while investigators continued working to establish what triggered the stabbing and reconstruct the events that led to the fatal police shooting.
