RAWALPINDI – Pakistan Captain Babar Azam is likely to be rested during five-match T20I series against New Zealand as the top management is deliberating the matter carefully, the sources close to the development said on Wednesday.

“The decision to rest Babar Azam may be taken as part of team’s rotation strategy,” said the sources while quoting Pakistan Head Coach Azhar Mahmood.

Azhar Mahmood, the head coach, also hinted at the possibility of resting Babar Azam during the T20I series against the Kiwis. He was talking to the reporters in Rawalpindi.

“We will make this decision with care and after proper evaluation of the demanding situation,” said Azhar while responding queries about Babar Azam.

When asked about Shaheen Afridi, he said that he came to know that he was likely to miss the first two games against New Zealand.

But, he said, these reports came from the media and not from the board or the management. He said Shaheen is fit.

Mahmood expressed confidence, noting the return of Mohammad Amir and Imad Wasim as valuable assets that enhance the team’s flexibility.

“The squad is well-balanced, covering all facets of the game. The availability of Mohammad Amir and Imad Wasim adds depth to our options. Moreover, our batting lineup comprises top-tier talent,” said Mahmood.

He also rebuffed the notion of labeling the New Zealand team as a “B team”.
