TEXAS – At least 24 are dead and several others are missing as severe flooding hit by catastrophic flooding following hours of relentless torrential rainfall, the local media reported on Saturday.
The extreme weather has paralyzed daily life, with streets and highways submerged, homes isolated and entire communities cut off.
According to emergency officials, the flooding was triggered by rainfall amounts that matched or exceeded monthly averages in just a few hours. The city of San Angelo has been identified as the worst-hit area, with 6 to 10 inches of rain recorded in several parts of the city. The deluge turned urban streets into waterways, making rescue operations and mobility nearly impossible.
The authorities have launched large-scale search and rescue operations, deploying over 100 military personnel to assist in locating missing persons and evacuating stranded residents. Helicopters, boats, and ground teams are actively working to reach those trapped by rising waters.
“The extent of the flooding is unprecedented in some areas,” said a spokesperson from the Texas Emergency Management Agency. “Our immediate priority is to save lives and get people to safety.”
In addition to the confirmed fatalities, the numerous individuals are still unaccounted for, and prompted continued rescue efforts through challenging conditions. The power outages, disrupted communication networks and submerged infrastructure are further complicating the emergency response.
The state officials issued warnings for potential additional flooding as forecasts predict continued rainfall in the coming days. The residents have been urged to remain indoors, avoid unnecessary travel and follow evacuation advisories where applicable.
This disaster added to a growing list of climate-related emergencies across the United States, raising concerns about preparedness and infrastructure resilience amid increasingly volatile weather patterns.
