Army Deployment Authorised in KP Amid Emergency, Governor’s Rule

The federal government has authorised the deployment of Pakistan Army troops and assets in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) to assist civil authorities in maintaining security following the imposition of an emergency and governor’s rule in the province.

The Ministry of Interior issued the authorisation through SRO (1)/2026 on Sunday under Article 245 of the Constitution.

The deployment will remain in effect for the duration of the emergency and governor’s rule.

According to the notification, the troops will help protect lives, citizens’ property and government installations. KP Governor Faisal Karim Kundi, in consultation with the Military Operations Directorate at General Headquarters (GHQ), will determine the number of troops and resources required.

Meanwhile, security was tightened in Peshawar, where shipping containers were placed at several locations to block key roads.

Police were deployed in large numbers around Governor House, while traffic congestion was reported following the closure of major routes.

Telecommunications services, including landline and DSL connections, were also reported suspended in the provincial capital.

The move comes amid escalating tensions between the federal government and the PTI-led KP administration over counterterrorism policy. The PTI has accused the Centre of excluding it from provincial security decisions, a charge the federal government denies.

In Islamabad, the sealing of KP House forced the opposition alliance Tehreek-i-Tahafuz-Ayin-i-Pakistan (TTAP) to relocate its planned press conference.

After being denied permission to hold the event at the National Press Club, the alliance decided to convene it at Jamia Al Wilaya near Bhara Kahu.
