Nazir for pursuing accountability in transparent manner
Chairman National Accountability Bureau (NAB), Lt Gen (R) Nazir Ahmed has said that the NAB had achieved a record-breaking recovery of Rs2.962 trillion during the first quarter of 2026, marking a dramatic surge in its performance and setting an assertive tone for the year ahead.
He was talking to media persons here Wednesday at a news briefing held at the NAB headquarters.
Deputy Chairman NAB Sohail Nasir, Director General (DG) Amjad Majeed Aulakh and other senior NAB officials were also present on the occasion.
The NAB chairman said that the recovery reflected a 33-fold increase compared to Rs91.01 billion recovered during the same period in 2025, underscoring enhanced efficiency, targeted reforms, and strengthened enforcement capacity. He was of the view that a major portion of the recoveries came from the reclamation of state land across multiple regions. NAB Lahore and Multan collectively recovered 4,034 acres valued at Rs23.33 billion, while NAB Karachi and Sukkur reported the recovery of 54,387 acres worth Rs2.89 trillion, accounting for the bulk of the total figure. In Balochistan, NAB recovered 51,577 acres of state land valued at Rs36.54 billion.
The NAB chairman further said that, in addition to land recoveries, the bureau secured Rs11.08 billion through plea bargains, settlements, auctions, and court-imposed fines. He added that Rs1.78 billion had been disbursed to 6,475 affectees in cases related to cheating the public at large.
He was of the view that the bureau’s performance was the result of improved case management, enhanced inter-departmental coordination, and a renewed focus on high-value sectors, which had significantly strengthened NAB’s ability to identify, trace, and recover misappropriated assets.
Highlighting future prospects, he said that NAB, in collaboration with provincial governments, had traced significant additional recovery potential.
