ISLAMABAD – Police have arrested an individual who allegedly posed as a US embassy official in capital city of Islamabad.
Reports said the suspect is an Afghan national who is already wanted in several fraud cases. He reportedly entered the diplomatic enclave in a vehicle while impersonating a diplomatic officer.
The US embassy has filed a complaint against the Afghan national. Acting on this information, the police, with the assistance of intelligence agencies, apprehended the suspect.
The Afghan national has been transferred to Secretariat Police Station for further legal proceedings.
Meanwhile, officials confirmed on Wednesday that the process of closing all 42 Afghan refugee camps in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, which had been operating for the past 55 years, has been completed.
The closures were carried out in two phases: five camps were shut in the first phase, while the remaining 37, spread across various districts of the province, were closed during the second phase. The federal government has been formally notified of the move.
The initiative is primarily aimed at bringing the repatriation process of Afghan refugees to a proper conclusion. Following the closures, the voluntary return of over 300,000 Afghan refugees has commenced. During the operation, police and other law enforcement agencies were deployed, and action was taken against refugees living in the province without proper registration.
Officials emphasized that shutting down these long-standing camps is intended to improve the management of refugee registration and residency, as well as to eliminate illegal settlements.
