RAWALPINDI – Pakistani TV host Rabia Ahsan was found shot dead inside her bedroom at her Rawalpindi residence on Sunday, with police taking her husband into custody as disturbing details of the incident coming out.

The 40-year-old journalist, who was working with 92 News, was found dead with gunshot wound at her home in Sector 2, Gulshanabad, near Adiala Road. Her sudden death raised serious questions, particularly after her husband reportedly claimed that the shooting occurred accidentally while he was handling a pistol.

Rabia had reportedly appeared on her television programme the previous night, making the tragedy even more heartbreaking for colleagues and viewers who had watched her on screen just hours before her death.

Police detained Rabia’s husband, Ahsan Tahir Khan, shortly after the incident and recovered a pistol believed to have been involved in the shooting. Ahsan, reportedly a Grade 18 employee of the Overseas Pakistanis Foundation, initially told investigators that he was playing with the firearm when it accidentally discharged and struck his wife.

Punjab Information Minister Azma Bokhari also referred to the husband’s reported explanation while discussing the incident. However, investigators have not established whether the shooting was accidental or deliberate, and the husband’s version remains under scrutiny.

Reports suggest the couple had married by choice and were parents to two daughters. Some accounts indicate there had been no major known marital disputes between them. Rabia’s mother and sisters were also reportedly present at the residence when the incident occurred.

Rawalpindi City Police Officer Hassan Mushtaq Sukhera visited the crime scene alongside senior police officials and confirmed that Rabia’s body had been recovered from her bedroom. According to the police chief, the journalist sustained a gunshot wound from the front, just below her neck, although some initial reports described the injury as being to the head.

A Punjab Forensic Science Agency team reached the residence to collect evidence and examine the circumstances surrounding the shooting. The recovered pistol is expected to undergo forensic examination, while investigators are gathering witness statements and other evidence.

The victim’s body was transferred to a hospital for a post-mortem examination to determine further medical details surrounding her death.

Rabia Ahsan, also identified in some reports as Rabia Ahmed Khan, was a familiar face in Pakistani television journalism. She co-hosted the current affairs programme Muqabil alongside senior journalist Amir Mateen.

During her career, she had reportedly worked with several television networks, including GTV and Hum News. Apart from journalism, Rabia was also involved in the beauty industry and reportedly operated an Islamabad-based salon known as Salon de Rabiya.

Police are examining multiple possibilities, including accidental firearm discharge, domestic circumstances, personal disputes and potential criminal wrongdoing. Investigators have yet to establish a motive or determine whether anyone deliberately caused her death.
