WASHINGTON – US President Donald J Trump has claimed that Paris will soon become a Muslim city, criticising French President Emmanuel Macron for allowing people from around the world to enter France.
Speaking to US media, Trump said he had warned Macron long ago that allowing large numbers of people to enter the country was a major mistake.
“I told Macron a long time ago that he was making a big mistake by allowing people from all over the world to come into France,” Trump said, adding that Paris would soon become a Muslim city.
He also said he had advised the French president to close the country’s borders.
Trump’s remarks come amid reports of violent incidents and protests in France, during which one person participating in the demonstrations was killed and hundreds of police officers were injured. Authorities have reportedly arrested around 1,800 people in connection with the unrest.
Following the violent protests, Trump also criticised France in a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, claiming that migrants had taken over the country.
He urged the French government to close its borders immediately.
The US president’s comments have brought immigration, border security and the demographic changes in European cities back into the spotlight.
