Per unit electricity price likely to increase from January 2027

Pakistan May Increase Electricity Rate By Rs2 56 Per Unit

ISLAMABAD – Electricity price in Pakistan is likely to surge to Rs27.31 per unit from 1 January 2027, according to preliminary estimates submitted by the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA).

The agency has projected the overall cost of electricity purchases at Rs3.55 trillion under its initial estimates for the upcoming tariff review.

The projections form part of the process to revise electricity rates for consumers served by former WAPDA distribution companies.

The revised reference cost for the new period will be determined during the review process and used as the basis for setting electricity tariffs.

The proposed cost of Rs27.309 per unit represents an estimate for electricity purchases in 2027.

The final consumer tariff will depend on the outcome of the review and the determination of the revised reference cost.

Earlier this month, electricity prices were increased by Rs1.11 per unit for one month under the August fuel price adjustment.

According to a notification issued by the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA), the additional charge was to be collected from consumers across the country, including Karachi, through their October electricity bills.

Sources estimated that the fuel adjustment would place an additional burden of Rs19 billion on electricity consumers. However, lifeline consumers were exempted from the increase.
