October Electricity Bills may get Rs3.44 Per Unit Relief as Govt Caps Fuel Price Adjustment

ISLAMABAD – Electricity consumers have been spared potential increase of Rs3.44 per unit in fuel adjustment charges after the Power Division took targeted measures to contain the impact of expensive fuels and imported liquefied natural gas (LNG) on power generation.

The expected Fuel Price Adjustment (FPA) for September has been brought down to Rs2.56 per unit from a potential Rs6 per unit, providing significant relief to consumers already facing high electricity costs.

The statement said limited load management lasting between two and two-and-a-half hours was carried out during September to prevent the additional financial burden from being passed on to consumers.

Power Division explained that the September FPA could have climbed to Rs6 per unit due to the impact of expensive alternative fuels used for electricity generation. To mitigate these costs, targeted load management was implemented to reduce reliance on costly power generation.

It further said efforts were made to limit the financial impact of imported LNG prices, helping keep the expected September fuel adjustment at Rs2.56 per unit.

However, the relief comes amid concerns over the availability of gas during the coming winter. Power Division warned that rising demand for domestic gas during colder months could further restrict supplies, potentially creating additional challenges for the energy sector.

The statement added that the power sector would continue to require regasified liquefied natural gas (RLNG) to maintain stability in the electricity system.

While the measures are expected to limit the September fuel adjustment, the anticipated winter gas shortage highlights the continuing challenge of balancing fuel availability, electricity generation costs and consumer relief.
