ATC Extends Hammad Azhar’s Remand in Jinnah House Case

An anti-terrorism court (ATC) on Thursday extended Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Hammad Azhar’s physical remand by 12 days in the Jinnah House attack case linked to the May 9, 2023, riots.

During the hearing, the investigating officer sought an extension to conduct a polygraph test, alleging that Azhar had played a leading role in the attack.

Defence counsel Sikandar Zulqarnain opposed the request, questioning the police’s claims about the recovery of evidence and arguing that the investigation had made insufficient progress despite 37 days of physical remand. He requested that Azhar be sent to judicial custody.

Azhar denied the allegations, claiming he was in Bhakkar on May 9, 2023, and had not been interrogated during his physical remand. He also accused the police of making contradictory statements and sought the complete case record, including an earlier forensic report.

After hearing arguments from both sides, ATC Judge Sardar Muhammad Akram approved the police request and granted another 12 days of physical remand.
