Emergency in KP looms as PM Shehbaz, Zardari call NA, Senate Sessions for October 13

Emergency In Kp Looms As Pm Shehbaz Zardari Call Na Senate Sessions For October 13

ISLAMABAD – A major political confrontation could be brewing between Islamabad and Peshawar as the federal government weighs imposing emergency in PTI-ruled Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, with separate sessions of the National Assembly and Senate scheduled for October 13.

The reported plan comes amid growing security concerns, persistent terrorism threats and strained relations between the federal government and the provincial administration led by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).

The federal cabinet could take up the proposal as early as Sunday. However, the government has yet to formally announce a decision to impose emergency, leaving the province’s political future hanging in the balance. The issue reportedly came under discussion during a high-level meeting between President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif at Aiwan-e-Sadr, where the country’s overall political and security situation was reviewed.

A key point of discussion was reportedly a report submitted by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi, which highlighted law and order challenges and security concerns in the province.

President’s House announced that separate sessions of the National Assembly and Senate would be held on Tuesday, October 13. The official statement did not explicitly confirm that emergency would be imposed, nor did it disclose the specific agenda of the parliamentary sessions in that regard.

The meeting brought together some of the country’s most senior government officials, including Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, Adviser to the Prime Minister on Political Affairs Rana Sanaullah, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, Attorney General Mansoor Usman Awan, Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar and Federal Minister Ahsan Cheema.

Senator Sherry Rehman, Syed Naveed Qamar, Senator Saleem Mandviwalla and Dr Asim also assisted President Zardari during the discussions.

The reported emergency proposal threatens to open another front in the already tense relationship between the federal government and the PTI-led administration in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

With security concerns reportedly at the centre of the deliberations, the coming days could prove critical in determining whether Islamabad pursues the extraordinary measure or seeks another way to address the province’s challenges.

October 13 parliamentary sessions are now drawing particular attention as political observers await further details about the government’s intentions. For now, key questions remain unanswered, including the legal mechanism for imposing emergency, its possible scope and duration, and whether the federal cabinet will formally approve the proposal.
